Within its hoops checklist, the goals are to finish the regular season with eight straight victories, push its cumulative home court win streak to 17 games and secure the top seed in the upcoming Midwest Division tourney within the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League (WBCBL).
The Surge (8-1) hosts the Majestics (3-6) Saturday afternoon at UMSL’s Mark Twain Building (1 University Boulevard, St. Louis, MO.) Tipoff is at 1:05 p.m.
St. Louis collected its seven straight duke, and maintained its spotless record (4-0) at home this season, with Saturday’s 95-72 win over Cleveland Crush.
In the contest, the Surge churned a 49-27 halftime lead en route to victory. Forward Shanity James topped the locals’ ledger with 13 points while Jaleesa Butler and Michala Johnson each added a dozen.
The trio will be complimented Saturday by starters Rebecca Harris and Leah Cotton, who each sports double-digit averages on the season.
Bianca Beck, Cassie Rochel, Brittany Wlison, Denisha Womack, Raven Berry, Jenny Rocha and Tori Waldner are also primed for quality minutes, both offensively and defensively.
St. Louis currently holds the top spot in the WBCBL’s Midwest Division (7-1) with rivals Flyers Elite and Nebraska Strikers both one game back in the standings. A Saturday victory locks the top seed for the league’s divisional tourney that launches next weekend.
The Surge also possesses a 16-game home winning streak at UMSL that dates back to its 2014 home opener.
Saturday’s opponent, Kansas City, currently sits in third place in the WBCBL Midwest standings after Sunday’s 84-79 win over Iowa. The Majestics are paced by 6-1 forward Tanisha Smith, who comes into this weekend’s affair with a 20-point-plus average.
The Surge has averaged 1,500 fans for its home games this season at UMSL and projects a similar turnout Saturday afternoon as they ignite its post-season push.
Tickets are $8 for adults while students are $5. Children five and under are free and youths wearing their local hoops jerseys also receive complimentary admission.
