Peoria, IL – The Peoria Chiefs were held to three hits in a shut out by the Beloit Snappers on Wednesday evening, losing 3-0. Peoria falls to 5-2 in the second-half and 35-41 overall as they host the Snappers on Thursday for the final game of the four-game series with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch at Dozer Park.
Austin Sexton started the game for Peoria, allowing a single to Snappers leadoff hitter Mike Martin in the first before retiring the next three hitters to end the inning. The righty started the second inning for the Chiefs, but in a 2-2 count to Luis Barerra Sexton suffered an undisclosed injury and left the game. Frederis Parra came on in relief and retired the side.
In the third, Beloit grabbed a lead with Parra on the hill. With one out, JaVon Shelby hit a deep home run to left field to give the Snappers a 1-0 advantage. Martin followed with a single and scored when Luke Persico singled to give Beloit a 2-0 lead.
The Snappers extended their lead by a run in the seventh. Shelby smacked his second home run of the game to left against Chiefs reliever Max Almonte to make it 3-0. Almonte retired the next three Snappers to get out of the inning.
Peoria’s best chance came against Heath Bowers in the ninth inning. With one out, Stefan Trosclair walked and moved to second on a wild pitch and Brian O’Keefe reached on an infield single. Ryan McCarvel, who hit a walk off home run on Tuesday against Beloit, came to the plate but grounded into a game-ending double play.
Sexton threw one scoreless inning before leaving the game, allowing one hit with a strikeout. Parra (1-1) hurled four innings of relief in a loss, allowing two runs on five hits with one strikeout. Almonte went two innings out of the bullpen, allowing a run on three hits with a walk and a strikeout. Yeison Medina worked two scoreless innings while allowing two hits and two walks with two strikeouts and hit a batter.
